On Wednesday I’m taking a short vacation to Minnesota to visit my family and spend a couple days taking pictures of the rural heartland. To prepare for my journey into the extraordinary land of corn and lutfisk, I’ve been listening to 89.3 The Current.
The Current is part of my 3 radio station rotation. Lotsa people ask me places to find new music and what I’ve been listening to lately. I always point them to three member supported music sources; Chicago’s indie start-up CHIRP Radio, Seattle’s KEXP and my hometown’s favorite The Current, which is part of Minnesota Public Radio. If you like good music and are looking for a place to discover new bands, these stations are exactly what you are looking for.
With all the garbage radio out there playing the same commercial after commercial and jamin the manufactured pop sensations into our brains, it’s nice to know that there is radio out there that is dedicated to playing solid commercial free music from bands that have actual talent.
These three are all available streaming online, you can get KEXP & The Current over the air-waves in Seattle and the Twin Cities, however CHIRP is still working on getting some air play in Chicago, but for now, you can at least enjoy their tunage online.
