New York vs Chicago Pizza
Three years ago I was living in the wonderful city of Minneapolis, Minnesota. As cool as MPLS is, I had to get out and explore a new city. I had job offers in both Chicago and New York and I had a hard time deciding where my new home away from home would be. To help me decide, I sat down with a friend and created a list of positives and negatives of each city.
A big difference between Chicago and New York is the pizza. Of course, pizza was not the deciding factor, however I remember it being an important line item. Pizza is part of their identities and I love both styles and both cities.
Thin vs. Thick or Thin + Thick. Fight or love? What do you think? Each person is very passionate about their preferred style. One of our next shirts is going to be pizza focused and we can’t decide if we should have a slice of thick and thin crust fighting (perhaps a street fight scene?) or being friends (holding hands walking into the sunset?). So, we’re throwing it out to you. Vote, leave a comment, let us know what you think.
If you leave a comment you will be eligible to win the first Chicago/New York pizza t-shirt. We will do the drawing Monday March 1st and announce the winner Wednesday March 3rd. So spread the word, tweet and tell your friends.
This poll will be open until Sunday, Feb. 28
Update: The Chicago vs New York pizza t-shirt is complete and available for $17 right here. Get it while its pipping hot.

I love Chicago pizza, always have, always will. I have had NY pizza and it was good but if you were to put 2 pizzas in front of me, one from NY and one from Chicago, I’ll always choose the pizza from chicago.

NYC style is the only thing that can be called pizza. what we make here in chicago, this deep dish thing…while very tasty..i cannot bring myself to call it pizza. its to much. NYC style is subtle, each flavor getting it space.
put a slice of each infront of me and I’ll take NYC every time. Infact I spent a weekend in NYC last month and all i ate was pizza….mmm…
I can’t choose. I love them both for different reasons. If you put two pizzas in front of me, I’d have a slice of each.
I can’t eat a whole lot of deep dish, but when I’m entertaining out-of-towners I enjoy a mound of it.
As a Chicago-centric shirt, you have to make chicago the top slice! Personally, I think you should have the front of the shirt showing the front view of them walking through a park holding hands…but then have the back showing the back view of them and chicago slice should be “secretly” wearing a shirt which says “size matters” on the back implying the superiority of the thick chicago slice. Mmmmmmm
Chicago pizza is by far the better of the two options! It has more flavor and more opportunities for creative combination.
Any chicago pizza pictured, if not stuffed (deep dish), should be shown in square pieces.
I’m from Chicago, and I gotta say I prefer NY style! There’s something to be said about the right kind of thin crust. I’ve also had some soggy, uncooked deep dish experiences that have totally turned me off the true “Chicago-style” pizza.
I love Chicago style pizza, for sure!

Great points and some great comments, keep em coming. There’s a free t-shirt to be won after all!
I like the shirt idea with the back side. You don’t even have to put the words on it and the message will get across. I also want to reinforce for the graphic that Chicago pizza doesn’t have thick crust, it has thick cheese. Yuummy!
I liked Katie C’s comment.
Clint,
There has only ever been one. There is only currently one. And there will only ever be one.
It can be found at 3033 N Ashland Ave. I never really considered NY a style! Mostly just a pipedream.
Chicago style is soooo much better. There are just so many more options, soo much cheese.. Who can say no to a deep dish pizza. Hands down better.
I like both! Depends on my mood. This coming from someone who has worked for the last ten years making the Minnesota version of Chicago Deep Dish and New York Traditional…
As someone who’s lived in both cities for 5+ years each, there is no contest. Rules of thumb, if you can’t fold it, if you can’t get it by the slice, or if you can’t eat it while walking, it’s not pizza.
Definitely foes. Or at the very least friendly rivals. I’ve seen deep-dish pies acting like big bullies and thin crust all folded up and hiding a switchblade. Basically, they’re both tough mofos and I think both enjoy a brouhaha from time to time. Make ‘em fight Pandas!
Born and raised in the Bronx, NY, having lived in Italy during my early childhood, being of Sicilian descent and currently living in Chicago, I feel uniquely able to offer an opinion on this matter. Chicago pizza, by definition, is not pizza. From a culinary perspective, it’s an eggless quiche, but it is certainly not a pizza. “New York” style pizza is really just another way of saying Neopolitan pizza. With that said, there is no distinction in Italy between “deep dish” and “thin crust” pizza … it just simply doesn’t exist. While I can’t say that Chicago deep dish pizza is not tasty … it really is good … in reality it should not be called pizza because it simply is not pizza.
As for NY pizza / Neopolitan pizza … this is much more akin to what you would find in northern Italy. I judge pizza by how close it is to true Italian pizza (from Italy) and New York is the clear victor, not only because it is actually pizza that is what you would find back in Italy, but also because the flavor components are crisper and more clean … it has the right proportion of tomato to basil to mozzarella to olive oil. One ingredient does not overpower another. Italian cooking is all about capriciousness and Chicago-style “pizza” simply has too many flavors going on and doesn’t remotely resemble pizza.
Staying true to my roots (both NYC and Italy) New York pizza is the only pizza here and is the obvious clear winner.
